Intro To Quilting 1: The basics of quilting Begins Feb. 8, 2025



This is a multi-session class that will teach all of the basics of building a quilt from fabric selection to a completed quilt including machine quilting and binding.  This 9 class series will take you from the raw materials to the finished quilt in two months, completing Intro to Quilting I.  
2-08-25: Get to know your tools, fabric selection, color placement and quilting terminology
2-15-25: Ruler work, cutting fabric and organization, beginning Strip sets, seam allowances

2-22-25: Introduction to 9 Patch Blocks, nesting seams and pressing
3-01-25: Introduction to Half Square Triangles (HST), pressing and squaring HST, Building a Shoo Fly Block
3-08-25: Putting the top together; alternating blocks, nesting seams, and pressing
3-15-25: Cutting and adding borders; Begin marking the top

3-22-25: Marking the top, building quilt sandwich, basting and pinning
3-29-25: Free motion quilting - you will need your walking foot for this class
4-05-25: Cutting and making the binding
4-12-25:  Finishing the binding and Graduation


Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: For this class, there are no skills required. The student will learn everything necessary throughout the class to include proper seam allowance, piecework, pressing techniques, rotary cutting, block squaring, block piecing, marking the top, basting, making a quilt sandwich, cutting and preparing binding, and finishing a quilt.
Materials Included: handouts provided; 10% class discount on fabric and notions excluding rulers
Requirements: Bring handouts and basic sewing equipment Sewing machine with 1/4" seam guide foot, walking foot, and foot without guide scissors, rotary cutter, small mat (if you own one), seam ripper, pins, needles, thread, fabric pens or chalk, pin cushion, and rulers/templates. At minimum a 4-1/2" square, a 10 - 1/2" square, and a 6-1/2" x 24-1/2" ruler. Students are required to purchase all fabric for this class from Sew Squared in order to insure the best possible finished product. Students are highly encouraged to purchase all notions / tools from Sew Squared, but it is not a requirement.
Instructor: Sheri Hudson - Sheri's Originals
Instructor Bio: Sheri is the owner of Sew Squared. She is a lifelong crafter, sewist and quilter. She has been sewing since she was 5 years old and made her first quilt block at age 7. She has made everything from hand stitched doll clothes to clothes for herself and children, as well as Halloween costumes. She sewed for the Munford Band for over 12 years doing everything from basic alterations to making equipment covers. She has been quilting for about 30 years and has been teaching sewing and quilting for over 10 years.
